MICHELSON MORLEY EXPERIMENT IN SIMPLE WORDS | MICHELSON MORLEY EXPERIMENTआसन भाषा मे |

Michelson Morley experiment was done to know the existance of the stationary ether in the space and two know the speed of light in different frame of reference.

Initially  Augustin-Jean Fresnel claimed that the space is filled with stationary ether. and velocity of every thing can be measured in frame of stationary ether. Acording to this theory the speed of light will vary in every frame of references.

For this two scientist Michelson and Morley, done an experiment known as Michelson Morley experiment. They setup an experiment in which they send the light in two direction , one perpendicular to earth and other in direction of motion of earth. And these light were reflected back by two mirror.

The setup was as shown in fig.

In this setup a sodium light was sent , through a half silvered mirror (the half silvered mirror reflect the half light and transfer the half light ) so half light is transferred to mirror A and half light was transfered to mirror B.

Since the earth is revolving so, the light ray sent in directon to motion of earth should take more time   ( although the time taken to move in direction of earth motion will be less but when it will come back after reflecting through mirror it will take more time , and some of both time one going in direction of motion and in opposite direction will be greater than if it was gone through a pependicular direction to the earth)  and hence there should be a phase shift , when they come back after reflecting through mirror.

But the result was different , there was no phase shift in interference of reflected light . It shows that both light took same time.

This theory gave an important result , that speed of light is constant in any frame of reference.
